Keto Diet | Things You Should Never Drink on the Keto Diet

Keto diet – Things to know before you try it.

Following a keto diet is a task in itself! There are a number of things to know before you try keto diet. Cutting down on things that you once loved and craved for with all your heart takes a whole lot of courage. But once you begin with your Keto journey, you’ll understand how Keto diet out of all the popular diets revolves around healthy eating with minimal intake.

A Keto diet entails a handful of food items and drinks that one can have. Other than that, anything which contributes excessive sugar, carbs or fat is outright thrown off the charts in a Keto diet. Drinks tend to be the trickiest of all as we have few perceptions about them and label them as ‘healthy or nutritious’. For example, all we know about fresh juices is that they’re healthy. However, when it comes to a Keto diet, fresh juices contribute to excessive calories, thus should be avoided. Similarly, there is a wide range of drinks you should avoid while following a Keto diet.

Here is a comprehensive list of the drinks that you should avoid having in a keto diet:

Diet Soda

The first rule of Keto diet is to avoid anything which makes your body dehydrated and tricks it into believing that it’s getting healthy food. The same rule applies to drinks which encompasses diet soda as well. Unlike its name, diet soda actually contributes in weight gain. It consists of artificial sweeteners which increases blood sugar levels and fat in your body, which can ultimately trigger diabetes. Also, diet soda slows down your metabolism and dehydrates your body which leads to brain fog, poor concentration, fatigue, drowsiness, etc. Therefore, it is advisable to refrain from any intake of diet soda while you are following a Keto diet.

Fresh/ Packed Fruit Juices

Fruit juices have excessively high amounts of carbs and sugar which makes it a bad option to consider while on a Keto diet. However, it is okay to have a little (regulated) amount of fresh juice or even raw fruits. Packaged juices contain artificial sweeteners, chemicals and preservatives which are ideally the worst for your body when you’re on a Keto diet as your body is already struggling to maintain this new diet, cope up with it and be healthy, all at the same time. Avoid heavy intake of any kind of artificial sweeteners.

Lattes are made with steamed milk and espresso. It is full of calories and sugar, which means it will definitely go down on the best drinks to have in a Keto diet. It might be difficult for some people to cut down on their latte intake, however, you can always go for black coffee which contains almost no sugar or milk.

Sports and Energy Drinks

These drinks are known to have excessively high amounts of caffeine and sugar which are unhealthy for your body. They can cause dental problems, high blood pressure, nausea, convulsions and even increase weight. The caffeine in sports and energy drinks also reduce insulin sensitivity which causes type 2 diabetes. Instead of having these drinks, you can always opt for iced-tea which is a recommended drink in Keto diet.

Quite the obvious, beers are a complete no for someone who is on a Keto diet. Beer is metabolized faster than any other drink by your liver which means you’ll be converting fewer fatty acids into ketones, leading to less fat being burned. Also, you will be on a low-carb diet, your glycogen levels will be drained and your body will be using up the stored fat instead of the continuous glycogen you used to intake through drinks and food. Consumption of alcohol will only make it worse for your body to remain in the keto stage.
